On 4-17-13 at about 8:00am, San Mateo Fire Department Engine company was flagged down by contractors working along the 300 blk. of So. El Camino Real in San Mateo. During some "trenching" work, a PG&E gas line was punctured causing a gas leak. San Mateo Police and Fire personnel immediately began evacuation of two nearby buildings and a rapid notify alert was sent to residences in the immediate area to shelter in place. PG&E immediately responded to the scene to shut off the gas supply. A Unified Command Post was put in place with San Mateo Fire, San Mateo Police, AMR, CalTrans and PG&E.

So. El Camino Real between Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue (in both directions) was closed until the incident was deemed secure by emergency personnel on scene. Traffic was diverted to the surface streets surrounding those three intersections. Burlingame Police personnel assisted with traffic control on nearby surface streets.

There were no injuries reported and traffic has been reopened in the area.some continued delays are expected as traffic flow slowly returns to normal.
