Missing Plane Found - Julian

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are expected to arrive in Julian this morning to investigate a plane crash in the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve.

Volunteers with the Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) Team found the wreckage just before 1:00 a.m. on a rugged, steep hillside near the top of Volcan Mountain. The bodies of a man and woman were found in the crash site.

The Piper Mooney plane took off from Palm Springs and was supposed to land at Gillespie Field when it was lost on radar just after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9th. At that time, the weather was cold with sleet, snow and high winds.

Sheriff's ASTREA helicopters tried to search the area, but had to abandon their efforts due to the weather, which made flying unsafe.

Sheriff's SAR, Border Patrol's BORSTAR (Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue) Team, San Diego Mountain Rescue, AERO Reserve and Civil Air Patrol members were dispatched to help with the search. A "ping" on the pilot's cell phone helped them in locating the wreckage.
