Update on arrests in damage to vehicles on I43.
On Sunday at around 1:30 pm several vehicles that were on I43 between Mason Street and Manitowoc Road were struck by marbles that appeared to have been shot from a device from the wooded area on the west side of the road. Some vehicles had windows smashed out and some were dented. Green Bay Police Officers and Brown County Deputies responded to the area and searched it and took reports of damage.
We located a hole in a fence and an empty marble bag near it, along with a bag from a local store that it appeared the marbles were bought at. We interviewed the clerks at the store and a description of two suspects was provided. One of the males made a statement that he had just gotten stitches and he hoped he didn’t tear them out. Media alerts went out and a neighborhood canvas was done. Other victims came forward to report broken windows and damaged vehicles.
We also received a report from a 58 year old female who was a passenger on a motorcycle who was struck by a marble in the leg. She reported she was riding with her husband and felt a shooting pain in her thigh and later saw a large bruise from the marble hitting her.
Last evening a citizen called to provide us the names of the people they believed were involved. The citizen reported that the two males frequently went to that wooded area by I43 with slingshots and marbles to shoot at birds and squirrels. One of the males, later identified as Kyle Ackerboom, 20 years old, lives in the area and was picked up by officers and interviewed. A search was done at Ackerboom’s residence and the slingshot that was used, along with marbles, was recovered. The other male was identified as a friend of Kyle’s, Griffin Lawson, 19 years old. He was located leaving a residence on the west side of Green Bay When he was approached by officers he tried to conceal a bag of marbles by throwing it.
Based on the statements obtained it appears that Ackerboom and Lawson had been shooting at vehicles on I43 in that area for 2-3 weeks. They became bored with shooting at squirrels and birds in the woods and decided to shoot at vehicles. Information was provided that they made a game of it to see who could hit 15 vehicles first. They had rules where each one would get three turns unless they hit a vehicle, in which case they would then get an extra turn. One of the males admitted to being in the store and purchasing the marbles on Sunday, and one of the males did recently receive stitches in his hand.
At this time we have placed them in jail on recommended charges of 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety (felony) and 15 counts of Criminal Damage to Property.
If you believe you were a victim please contact the Green Bay Police Department at 448-3200 and reference case #13-214217.
