#LASD Deputies Respond to Inmate Disturbance at Men’s Central Jail

Approximately 120 inmates were involved in a physical altercation and disturbance in their module at Men’s Central Jail on Friday, December 4, 2015 at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Deputies and custody assistants in the immediate area when the altercation started, used verbal commands in an attempt to gain compliance.  When the inmates involved refused to follow instructions, lockdown procedures were immediately implemented.  Within minutes, personnel on scene were joined by deputies from the Men’s Central Jail Emergency Response Team, who responded to prevent escalation between the inmates and restore order.  Deputies continued using verbal commands.  When they were ignored and ineffective, liquid Oleoresin Capsicum, and eventually pepper-spray balls, were used to quell the disturbance and restore relative order within 10 minutes.  Additional security at the facility was later provided by Emergency Response Teams from the Inmate Reception Center and Twin Towers Correctional Facility, as deputies worked to sort out the incident.

The preliminary investigation has not revealed the reason for the altercation.  No weapons were seen, or are believed to have been used by the inmates, nor were any found during a subsequent search of the involved area.  Deputies from the Custody Investigative Services Unit responded and are continuing the investigation.

Ten inmates were treated by facility medical personnel for minor injuries sustained during the inmate fight.  One inmate was transported to a local hospital after he reported that he was having difficulty breathing.  His injuries were non-life threatening.

Men’s Central Jail remained on lockdown until early this morning, December 5, 2015.  Normal operations have since resumed.

No deputies were injured.

There is no further information available at this time.
