The investigation is continuing into the shooting death of a male black juvenile.
Investigators have spoken to a witness who stated they saw the incident when the deputies first approached the subject at the rear of the apartment complex. The witness stated they were not able to tell if the subject had a gun, but heard the deputies telling him, “Don’t reach for it, don’t reach for it”, several times, intimating that he had a gun. The subject ignored the deputies and ran away into the apartment complex.
The witness saw the deputies run after the subject and then heard the gunshots a few seconds later.
Immediately after the shooting, the courtyard of the apartment complex was flooded with people who were trying to get to the subject and the deputies. Citizens were extremely irate while confronting the deputies regarding the shooting. The deputies estimated the crowd to be 30-40 people. The deputies immediately requested medical assistance and additional personnel in an effort to calm the citizens and prevent them from reaching the subject. While waiting for additional deputies and trying to control the situation, it is believed that someone may have been able to gain possession of the gun and take it.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into a deputy-involved shooting that left one subject dead. The incident occurred on the 1200 block of West 107th Street, Los Angeles.
On Sunday, February 4, 2018, at approximately 8:14 P.M., deputies from South Los Angeles Sheriff’s station responded to a call for service of a young man pointing a handgun at a motorist who was driving eastbound in the 1200 block of 107th Street, Los Angeles. Upon their arrival they saw an individual matching the description of the subject in the call. When the deputies went to contact him, they saw he had a handgun tucked into the waistband of his pants. The subject ran from the deputies and the deputies pursued the subject on foot. Sometime during the foot chase the subject, a male black 16 years old, turned toward the deputies and that was when a deputy involved shooting occurred.
The subject was struck several times in the upper body by gunfire and collapsed at the location. Paramedics were summoned to treat the subject but he was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of this report, the subject’s gun has not been located.
The investigation is on-going and no further information is available.

Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner - Coroner, Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. The mission of the Office of Inspector General is to provide strong, independent and effective oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and to ensure transparent, accountable and constitutional policing for the County of Los Angeles. The Critical Incident Review panel convenes to perform a preliminary risk management analysis of the shooting. This panel is comprised of the concerned chief and unit commander, risk management and training personnel, the chairperson of the Executive Force Review Committee, and a representative from the Office of the Los Angeles County Counsel. Every aspect of a Deputy-Involved shooting is ultimately evaluated by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee, which determines whether there are any policy, tactical, supervisory, or training violations or concerns. The Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney also participates in the investigatory process and conducts a legal analysis of the shooting.
