Auto Theft Suspects Confronted by Owner

On February 20, 2018, at 3:55 AM, the La Mesa Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a victim, who stated unknown suspects had just stolen his vehicle.  Before the theft, the victim had his white 2001 Toyota Tacoma parked in the 7200 block of Baldrich Street, in the City of La Mesa.

The victim was alerted to the theft when he heard his dog barking.  The victim went outside and saw two unknown males inside of his vehicle.  He confronted the suspects who tried to flee in his vehicle.  He opened the driver’s door and tried to pull one of the suspects out.  During the confrontation, one of the suspects pointed an object at him, which he believed to be a handgun.  The victim backed away from his vehicle.  As he backed away, he heard a gunshot.  The vehicle was last seen driving northbound on Kiowa Street.

During the investigation, police found a spent shell casing, near where the confrontation occurred.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect  #1 – Asian male adult, 5’ to 5’4”, thin build, wearing dark clothing
Suspect #2 – Asian male adult, 5’6” to 5’10”, heavy build, wearing dark clothing
