The name of the suspect in the Wednesday evening officer involved shooting has been released.

The deceased suspect in the August 1st officer involved shooting in Hereford, Tx has been identified as Jonathan Joey Mendoza, 35 year old male. Officers were attempting to apprehend Mendoza on his warrants for Parole Violation – Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, Assault Household Member – Impeding Breath or Circulation, Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, and Terroristic Threat. The Texas Rangers continue their investigation into the shooting and all investigative findings will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for review.

On August 1st, APD SWAT officers received information on a 35 year old male who was wanted on multiple felony warrants. Through the investigation the male was located at a residence in the 200 block of 6th Avenue in Hereford, Tx. The APD SWAT team worked with DPS and Deaf Smith County and attempted to take the male into custody on the warrants. The male exited the rear of the residence with a handgun and when he saw the officers in the back ran around towards the front of the residence and presented the handgun at officers in the front. APD SWAT officers shot the male. The suspect died on scene. With APD protocol the involved officers will be placed on a mandatory paid administrative leave. The suspect will be identified after next of kin has been notified. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting.
