SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, August 15th, at approximately 10:23 pm, a deputy from the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station responded to a residence in the 6200 block of Sunburst Avenue following the report of shots fired at the home of the reporting party.  As the deputy was talking to the reporting party, they began to hear additional shots being fired at them and striking the trailer. They immediately ran for cover behind the home.  The deputy requested assistance and additional deputies arrived near the location.   Deputies began to coordinate efforts to identify the location of the active shooter.  The deputy and the reporting party were continuing to be fired upon and advised dispatch that the shots fired were getting louder and the deputy felt the suspect(s) were getting closer to his location. As the deputy used a hand-held spotlight in an attempt to illuminate the suspect's position, a suspect shot at the spotlight. Additional deputies were able to locate a suspect armed with a long rifle advancing toward the trailer, getting closer to the deputy and the reporting party.  Deputies ordered the suspect to drop the gun; he did not comply with their demands.  A deputy-involved shooting occurred, and two suspects were seen running from the area.  A foot pursuit ensued, one suspect was apprehended in a nearby apartment complex carrying a backpack that contained a rifle.  A second suspect made it into an apartment and was taken into custody a short time later.  Deputies located a second backpack with rifle pellets in it.

The suspects were identified as two male juveniles, ages 16 and 17.  The suspects were not injured during the incident.  The rifle was a high powered .177-barrel break, pellet gun.  The suspects will be booked into Juvenile Hall for Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
