*3rd UPDATE* #LASD ELA Deputy Involved-Shooting at Salazar Park, East Los Angeles

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting, which resulted in the wounding of two deputies, death of one male suspect, wounding of another male suspect, and one male suspect being taken into custody.  The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at approximately 6:20 p.m., at Salazar Park, East Los Angeles. 
 
Both deputies have been released from the hospital.
 
The second suspect, Fernando Cruz, was pronounced dead at the hospital. 
 
The third suspect, Hector Martinez, has been released pending further investigation. 
 
The investigation is on-going and there is no further information available at this time.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting, which resulted in wounding of two deputies, the death of a male suspect, and the wounding of another male suspect. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at approximately 6:20 p.m., at Salazar Park, East Los Angeles.
 
Homicide detectives have learned, at approximately 6:17 p.m., the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station received a call for service regarding an assault with a deadly weapon located around the 500 block of South of Bonnie Beach Place, in the unincorporated county area of East Los Angeles. One of the victims stated, the suspects, who were in a black BMW, confronted him and several other victims demanding to know what gang they were from. At this time the suspects brandished a firearm in a threating manner toward the direction of the victims.
 
Deputies from East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station responded to the area and located the black BMW described in the call for service.  Deputies followed the vehicle into Salazar Park where the vehicle abruptly stopped.
 
The driver of exited the vehicle with a firearm and began shooting at the deputies. Deputies returned fire striking two of the suspects. During the exchange of gun fire, two deputies were also struck by gun fire, and seriously injured.

There were three patrol vehicles involved in the incident.

The first was a one-man car with a ride along who was a law enforcement technician participating in a ride-along.  The second had two deputies in the vehicle and the third vehicle also contained two deputies. An LASD Airship was also flying overhead monitoring the situation as back up.

The first deputy was shot in the upper chest area and was released from the hospital.

The second deputy was shot in the jaw, he is listed in serious, but stable condition.

The suspects are identified as the following:

Rene Herrera, 39 year old, male Hispanic was identified as the driver of the black BMW and the shooter. He is deceased, and a firearm was recovered from underneath his person at the scene of the shooting.

Fernando Cruz, 18 year old, male Hispanic who was the passenger sustained several gunshot wounds. He was transported to the local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Hector Martinez, 18 year old, male Hispanic, ran from the vehicle right before the shooting occurred. He was arrested without incident and booked at East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station for Attempted Murder on a Police Officer.

The driver, Rene Herrera has an extensive criminal history and is a documented gang member from the area.

The investigation is still on-going, and there is no further information at this time.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy involved shooting, which resulted in two deputies injured and the death of a man. The incident occurred on Wednesday September 19, 2018 at approximately 6:20 p.m., at Salazar Park, East Los Angeles. 
  
Investigators have learned East Los Angeles Station Deputies were responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call at 6th St and Bonnie Beach Place, East Los Angeles.  Deputies obtained a vehicle description and a short time after, observed the suspect vehicle close by.  They followed the vehicle, and the vehicle fled into Salazar Park and came to an abrupt stop.  At least one suspect exited the vehicle and began firing upon Deputies. The Deputies were hit by gun fire and went down.  Additional Deputies responded to the location and engaged the suspects at which time a Deputy involved shooting took place. 

One suspect is in custody, and one suspect was transported to a local hospital.

Another suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Deputies were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.  Both Deputies sustained gunshot wounds to their upper torso.   

The investigation is still ongoing.

NARRATIVE:

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are responding to assist East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station with a deputy-involved shooting with four suspects. The incident occurred Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at approximately 6:37p.m., near Salazar Park.

Two deputies were struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital. Deputies are in stable condition.  

One suspect is deceased at the scene. One suspect was injured and transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.

One additional suspect was arrested at the scene.

There is no additional information available at this time.
