#LASD Deputy-Involved Shooting, 4000 Blk Karling Pl, Palmdale

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, at approximately 9:15 P.M., Palmdale Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to the 4000 block of Karling Place in Palmdale, after receiving a call for service for an “assault with a deadly weapon” felony warrant suspect seen at the location.

When deputies arrived, they learned that the suspect was possibly hiding inside of a trailer at the location. When the deputies attempted to make contact with the male adult suspect, the suspect told them he was not going to come out and that he was armed.

Shortly thereafter, the suspect exited the trailer and pointed a firearm at the deputies.   A deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect then retreated and barricaded himself inside the trailer.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) responded to the scene and assumed command of the tactical response.

LASD Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) also arrived on scene to bring about a peaceful resolution.  Having established communication with the suspect and having made numerous attempts over several hours to persuade the suspect to surrender, the suspect refused to cooperate and continued to verbally threaten SEB deputies with a firearm.

In order to gain compliance from the suspect, SEB deputies successfully deployed a diversionary device.  During the attempt resolution effort, the suspect exited for a second time and a second deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect then fled back into the trailer and was later found deceased by apparent gunshot wounds.

LASD Homicide Bureau investigators have responded to the scene and have assumed command of the investigation.

No deputies were injured.

The identity of the suspect will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Investigators are still processing the scene and there is no additional information available at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.  If you wish to remain anonymous, call “LA Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), using your smartphone by downloading the “P3 MOBILE APP” on Google play or the App Store, or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
