Shooting Leaves One Hospitalized and Suspect in Custody

It was a tragic morning for the community as one person was shot during a funeral at the Fond du Lac Head Start gymnasium, where a funeral was taking place.

There was a report of a shooting at the Fond du Lac Ojibwe School this morning shortly before 10 a.m.

The shooting occurred in the gymnasium at the Head Start Building. There is no connection to the Fond du Lac High School. However, they all share a common campus. The Fond du Lac High School was briefly put on lockdown because of their proximity to the Head Start Building. All the students are safe. The school was not in session, but students were present for other activities. There were no children in the Head Start Building.

One person was shot, and one person is in custody.

We believe this was an isolated incident. There is no threat to the community at this time.

It is still early in the investigation, but the preliminary investigation shows a single shot was fired, and one person was struck.

The victim is a 45-year-old man from Minneapolis. We are not releasing the name at this time out of respect for the victim and his family. That person was transported to Community Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Essentia Hospital in Duluth. We do not have information on their condition.

Shelby Gene Boswell, 28-years old, of Minneapolis was taken into custody on the scene, and he is being held at the Carlton County Jail.

We are investigating the relationship between the victim and Mr. Boswell.

The victim was attending the funeral. We are not sure if Mr. Boswell was attending the funeral or came to the area to confront the victim.

Charges are pending

When officers arrived, they found Mr. Boswell still on the scene. Funeral goers intervened and helped hold Mr. Boswell until officers arrived.

We are interviewing several witnesses to determine exactly what happened. The motive is under investigation. There are numerous witnesses, and the interviews may take some time.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

There was surveillance video at the scene, investigators will review that video.
