Bank Robbery Suspect In Custody

On Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 2:57 p.m. the depicted suspect entered the US Bank inside the Pavilions Store at 2118 Newport Coast Drive, Newport Beach. The suspect presented a note
demanding cash and threatened that he had a gun. The suspect fled the location with cash.

Monday, December 23, 2019 at 12:45 p.m., the same suspect entered the Bank of America Branch on Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach and loitered in the lobby before handing a teller a similar demand note as before. The suspect appeared nervous and left the location with no cash in a possible black Mercedes SLK.

Again on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 4:44 p.m., the same suspect entered the City Bank at 1100 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach. This time the suspect was recognized by bank employees due to information shared with banks in the area by NBPD Detectives. Bank employees activated the alarm and the suspect fled the location.

A short time later, Newport Beach Police Patrol Officers located the suspect vehicle driving on Newport Center Drive. The suspect vehicle, a 2019 Mercedes, black, two door, failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. The suspect vehicle was last seen northbound the 73 Freeway before the Bear Street exit in Costa Mesa.

Suspect, Barry Allan Buydens, 56 years old, 5’11”, 175 lbs., blond hair and blue eyes, resident of La Quinta was identified by NBPD Detectives. After an overnight investigation and subsequent execution of a search warrant in La Quinta, Buydens was arrested Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at 8:25 a.m. by NBPD Detectives. Buydens was arrested for:
211 PC Robbery
664/211 PC Attempt Robbery
664/211 PC Attempt Robbery
2800.2 (A) CVC Felony Evading

Buydens was also arrested for an outstanding robbery warrant from another bank robbery he was identified in from May 24, 2018. This bank robbery occurred at the Bank of America at 21171 Newport Coast Road, Newport Beach.
