Duarte Crime Blotter for the Week of January 5-11, 2020

The following is a synopsis of crimes reported for the week of January 5-11, 2020:       
 
January 5, 2020

  • No significant activity.
 
January 6, 2020
  • Grand Theft Auto:
Between 2 a.m. and 9:45 a.m., an acquaintance of the victim stole his 2005 Saturn Ion from the 1600 block of Delford Avenue. The vehicle is still outstanding and the investigation is ongoing.
 
  • Aggravated Assault:
At approximately 3 p.m., deputies responded to an assault call at Duarte Liquor located at 1302 Duarte Road. Upon arrival, deputies located an adult male victim sitting on the ground in the parking lot bleeding from the nose and the back of his head. The victim stated he was walking through the parking lot, when an unknown male approached him on a bicycle and without provocation, punched him in the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head. The victim was treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital.  The investigation is ongoing.   
 
January 7, 2020
  • Petty Theft:
Sometime between 8:45 p.m. on January 6 and 7:30 a.m. on the 7, person’s unknown stole a $100 Bluetooth speaker from an unlocked vehicle in the 1000 block of Mount Olive Drive.
     
January 8, 2020
  • Petty Theft Arrest:
At approximately 12 p.m., deputies responded to Target located at 1050 Huntington Drive, regarding security detaining an adult female for petty theft.  Security advised deputies they observed the suspect select miscellaneous items, place them in her cart then enter the self-checkout aisle. The suspect was observed scanning and paying for only a few items and not additional $400 worth of merchandise in her cart. When interviewed by deputies, the victim apologized and stated she didn’t steal anything, she just forgot to scan all the items. The suspect was arrested for petty theft and all the stolen merchandise was returned to the store.    
 
January 9, 2020
  • No significant activity.
 
January 10, 2020
  • Shoplifting Arrest:
At approximately 11:15 p.m., Wal-Mart loss prevention observed an adult male placing approximately $225 worth of miscellaneous grocery and miscellaneous items in a back pack, then walking out without paying. The suspect was arrested by responding deputies and during questioning, he admitted to stealing the food and clothing items for the homeless that live in the riverbed.   
 
January 11, 2020
  • Grand Theft Auto:
Sometime between 10 p.m. on January 10 and 6 a.m. on the 11, a 2001 Nissan Frontier was stolen from the 2100 block of Park Rose Avenue.  The vehicle is still outstanding.
 
  • Aggravated Assault Arrest:
At approximately 10:30 a.m., an elderly female was preparing to exit the Wal-Mart located at 1600 Mountain Avenue, when an adult male approached her from behind and without provocation, punched her in the back of the head causing her to fall to the ground. The suspect casually walked out of the store, however, with information provided by witnesses, was detained by deputies a short distance from the store. After further investigation, the suspect was arrested for assault likely to cause great bodily injury, and elder abuse. The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to a local hospital.
 
    
CRIME PREVENTION TIP
 
Thefts are usually crimes of opportunity. Though we can’t always prevent thefts from occurring, we can try to prevent them by always locking and securing our homes and vehicles. If your home is equipped with an alarm system, please make sure to set them. Thefts from vehicles can occur quickly by criminals smashing a window or simply checking the door handle for an unlocked vehicle. Don’t become a target. When leaving your vehicle unattended, please lock your doors and remove all valuables from your vehicle.
