Novel Coronavirus Update
Dear Duarte Community:
Recently, an outbreak caused by a novel (new) coronavirus has resulted in infections in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. Because this is a rapidly evolving situation and because there is frequent travel among Los Angeles County residents and visitors to areas that might be impacted by this new virus, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is closely monitoring events and partnering with local and federal agencies.
U.S. health officials say they have confirmed the first American case The U.S. patient is a Washington man in his 30s who had recently traveled to Wuhan. He is now being treated in Everett, Washington.
Health screenings have begun in earnest at U.S. airports including LAX and SFO. Public schools will also be on alert, as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says it expects to see more U.S. cases of the virus in the future.
There are seven known types of human coronavirus, according to the CDC. Most of them cause mild symptoms. Two newer types, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, have been known to cause severe illness.
