South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management Weekly COVID Report – November 9, 2020; DPW Message About Leaf Removal

South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management Weekly COVID Report- November 9, 2020: 673 Total Cases, No New Deaths

We have, once again, seen our weekly COVID positive cases in the double digits, with 22 new cases reported last week. While this number is in line with statistics from the past two weeks, we look for trends over a longer period of time to show accurate patterns. In addition, because test results have been taking an extended period of time in many cases, with some results taking up to a week to come back, and many reports being back-logged for up to several months, our overall Township COVID-19 cases, currently at 673 cases, have appeared to increase at a higher rate than they actually are, and may not accurately reflect trends within South Brunswick.

Besides the number of Township residents testing positive for COVID-19, another metric we are using to monitor trends is the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations reported. Statewide, 1,439 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID, down from a high of over 8000 in April, but on a steady weekly increase since September 21st, when 349 individuals were hospitalized for COVID-19 throughout New Jersey.

It once again appeared that a number of South Brunswick Township cases involved community spread contained within family groups, meaning that efforts to quarantine from the community at large were effective, but the virus still spread throughout their individual households.

The average age of the 22 people who tested positive last week was 31 years of age. Eleven were male and 11 were female. In addition to those 22 new cases, we were informed of 7 additional cases confirmed from previous months, bringing our total number of COVID positive cases to 673. No new deaths were reported.

South Brunswick Township currently has 673 cases of residents who have tested positive. This number reflects both residents and people living in long-term care facilities within the Township. We have had no additional deaths reported in the past week. We currently have 33 Township residents who have passed away from the virus. Of those deaths, 17 were men and 16 were women. The average age of the individuals who passed away from the virus in the Township is 76 years old. Half of all individuals who passed away were living in, or connected to, long-term care facilities.

Middlesex County reports a total of 23,917 residents who have tested positive.

South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, and Health Department continue to work closely with our public and private school leadership in communicating vital information, assessing potential threats to safety, and collaborating on planning as students participate more and more in in-person activities.

The New Jersey State Department of Health website - https://covid19.nj.gov, provides a daily update on county and State COVID case changes.

The use of social distancing and properly worn face coverings has made an impact on the number of positive cases. Remain vigilant in protecting yourself and others by wearing face-coverings and keeping social distance.

A Message From the Department of Public Works Regarding Leaf Pickup:

As the leaves continue to fall, the Department of Public Works will be maintaining their leaf collection schedule, which can be found at: https://www.southbrunswicknj.gov/images/News-Notices/Leaf_collection_for_website_2020.pdf

Please remember to keep your leaves off of the road, which could lead to traffic being obstructed and the clogging of storm drains. Township ordinance allows for sweeping, raking, blowing, or otherwise placing leaves at the curb or along the edge of the street (not in the street) during the seven days prior to a scheduled and announced collection.  Leaves shall not be placed closer than ten feet from any storm drain inlets.

The Department of Public Works would like to thank you for your cooperation.
