Advisory

The cold weather is here to stay. Don't become the victim of a "car warm up theft" by leaving your running car unattended!

Did everyone survive the hail storms this weekend?
If we can survive 2020, we can survive anything Antelope Valley!

This weekend has shown that winter is upon us. Whether it be hail, snow, sleet, ice or freezing cold temps, the cold weather is here to stay.

One of the crime trends our deputies see through the winter months are "vehicle warm-up thefts", as many drivers are tempted to warm up their cars while they stay warm inside their homes. But cars left running, unlocked, and unattended are quick and easy targets for thieves.

Lancaster Sheriff's Station reminds you to never leave your car unattended while it is running or has the keys in the ignition. Would be thieves are looking for the perfect opportunity to take your car, and running back inside to stay warm or for just one second to get the kids, is all the time a car thief needs. Thefts of running cars can even happen in your driveway or your garage with the door open. Some newer model cars have a safety feature that prevents you from locking your keys in the car, but in turn, also prevents you from locking the vehicle if the keys are inside. Even if you manually lock the car, anyone can pull the door handle and unlock the car.

Be cautious, don't leave your running car unattended or unsecured and make sure you aren't left in the cold!

Stay warm Antelope Valley!

Lancaster Sheriff’s Station polices the City of Lancaster, Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, and the unincorporated communities of Antelope Acres, Lake Los Angeles, and Quartz Hill in the Antelope Valley.
