Township OEM Weekly COVID-19 Report - 43% Increase in Cases

SOUTH BRUNSWICK OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COVID BRIEFING
November 23, 2020

Office of Emergency Management Director and South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka and Township Manager Bernard P. Hvozdovic Jr. announced today another increase in the number of residents testing positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) this past week. New Jersey State Health Department officials continue to believe we will see an increase in cases and hospitalizations over the coming weeks.

“All the measurements we are seeing show a steady increase in the number of new cases over the coming weeks. If you can limit your travel, stay home as much as possible, and wear a face covering whenever you are not home, it will make a difference,” said Hayducka. “Remember the test results we are seeing now are people who contracted the disease up to two weeks ago, so the virus is not going to slow down in the near future unless we change our activity,” Hayducka added.

Manager Hvozdovic added, “The next two weeks will be crucial in combatting the virus. The week after Thanksgiving is when residents need to be at their highest alert. Health officials tell us that people will have contacted the virus during the Thanksgiving weekend and may not show any signs till the first weekend of December. Limit your interactions and wear face coverings to slow the spread.”

STATISTICS:

This past week, we were notified of 53 new residents testing positive. This number represents 43% more new cases than were reported last week, and is our largest number of new cases reported in a single week since April. With more testing being conducted, we anticipate increased cases over the coming weeks. In addition, 23 additional cases were reported from previous weeks. South Brunswick Township currently has 800 cases of residents who have tested positive. This number reflects both residents and people living in long-term care facilities within the Township.

Statewide, 2,693 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID, a steady weekly increase since September 21st, when 349 individuals were hospitalized for COVID-19 throughout New Jersey. The number of hospitalizations for the past week has increased by approximately 27%. Middlesex County saw its number of residents with COVID-19 increase by 315 new cases over the past week.

SCHOOLS:

South Brunswick Township public schools are currently in virtual learning mode, with no students or teachers in the buildings until at least December 14th, but that date may be extended further due to the course of the pandemic.

Clarifying Guidelines for Outdoor High School Sporting Events: A previous Administrative Order has received clarification that athletes, coaches, referees, trainers, and other individuals necessary to the performance of an outdoor high school sporting event are not included in the total number of individuals present at the gathering for purposes of the limit on outdoor gatherings. The order is already in effect, and will sunset on Monday, November 30, 2020.

South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, and Health Department will continue to work closely with our public and private school leadership in communicating vital information, assessing potential threats to safety, and collaborating on planning.

TRAVEL ADVISORY LIST:

A total of 46 states and territories are now on the Travel Advisory list. The only states NOT on the list are:   Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, New York, and Pennsylvania.  NJ Department of Health recommends not travelling outside of New Jersey, unless there is a need to cross state lines for work, school, worship, or other essential travel.

UPDATED STATE GUIDELINES:

RESTRICTIONS ON GATHERINGS - Executive Order 196:

  • INDOOR GATHERINGS are limited to a maximum of 10 people
  • OUTDOOR GATHERINGS are limited to a maximum of 150 people
  • EXCEPTIONS are made for religious services or celebrations, political events, weddings, funerals, memorial services, performances, judicial and legislative proceedings
DINING - Indoor dining will remain limited to 25% capacity

Given the current surge in COVID-19 cases, it is recommended that everyone only celebrate Thanksgiving with members of their household. Indoor gatherings are particularly dangerous places for COVID.
