Flash Flood Watch in Napa County Could Become Flash Flood Warning Overnight
Following an updated briefing from the National Weather Service, the County is issuing an evacuation warning for residents living in fire-impacted areas of the County in response to an incoming storm with possible debris/mudflow concerns. This evacuation warning is to advise residents within fire-impacted areas to remain alert to possible threats and to consider safety plans in the event of a life-threatening emergency. There is no immediate need to evacuate.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Flash Flood Watch for the LNU Lightning Complex and Glass Fire burn scars from Tuesday, 1/26/21 at 4pm to Thursday, 1/28/21 at 4pm. Heavy rainfall over the burn scars is expected up to and during the period of the watch. The heaviest rain is expected Tuesday, 1/26/21 10pm into Wednesday, 1/27/21 2am. Residents near the two burn scars should prepare for potential impacts, including debris flows, landslides, and flooding. If you feel the need to leave, now is an opportunity to do so safely.
A Flash Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible. In contrast, a Flash Flood Warning is issued when flash flooding is imminent or occurring. When NWS upgrades a Flash Flood Watch to a Flash Flood Warning, based on observed precipitation, they send a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) message to cell phones in the impacted areas through mobile carriers. WEA alerts are distinct from regular text messages in that they feature a special tone and vibration, both repeated twice. The WEA message will typically show the type and time of the alert, the agency issuing the alert, and any action the agency advises the public to take in response. NWS has advised that rainfall thresholds may trigger the issuance Flash Flood Warnings overnight and residents in impacted areas may receive WEA alerts on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service has also issued a High Wind Warning from 1/27/21 midnight to 1/27/21 noon. Strong and damaging winds could cause downed trees and tree limbs, possibly impeding evacuation routes. High wind may cause loss of power, impacting the ability to receive emergency notifications. Keep cell phones charged and monitor local radio stations for information in the event of power failure.
