Chief Moore releases 2020 Crime Statistics
The Janesville Community Crime Rate was at a 35 year low in 2020. We saw an 11% decrease in crime from 2019, a 2% decrease in violent crime, and a 12% decrease in property crime.
This is the community’s crime rate. While The Janesville Police Department shares the crime statistics, it takes an entire community to drive down crime with the help of our schools, parenting, the Human Services Department, the YWCA, the Boys and Girls Club, neighborhoods, just to list a few.
State and national crime trends are also dropping; however Janesville’s crime seems to be dropping at a faster rate.
Sadly, 4 members of our community died due to criminal homicide in first 3 months of 2020. This is abnormally high for Janesville; the number of homicide deaths is usually between 0-2 per year. Arrests have been made in all of the homicide cases. We are hopeful these arrests bring some level of closure to the families, and allow a path to healing. We continue to work to reduce victims of crimes, and to help the victims through these crimes. The community also experienced 6 deaths due to opiate overdoses in 2020.
The Janesville Police Department will continue with proactive policing efforts to address the core issues of crime. Some of the programing includes (but not limited to) Domestic Violence Program, High Risk Offender Program, outreach with our African American community and our Latino community, No Serve Alcohol List, chronic nuisance properties, Heroin program called DROP, Crisis Intervention Training, neighborhood connections, human trafficking, drug endangered children, homeless outreach, Handle with Care Program, and we are continuously monitoring national and regional events and preparing Janesville for things that may be coming our way.
