Arrest for Raced Based Incident in El Cerrito

Press Release:
On Tuesday, April 13th at 9:25 a.m., El Cerrito Police dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a homeless man spat in a woman’s face near the intersection of Potrero Avenue and Everett Street in El Cerrito. Within two minutes of being dispatched to the call, El Cerrito Police Officers arrived on scene and contacted the victim, an Asian woman. The victim told officers that she had just returned home and parked in her garage. She was surprised to discover that a man, whom she did not know, had followed her car into her garage. The man began shouting race-based insults at the woman and then spit in her face. The man left the garage, and the woman called the police.

A second responding officer located the suspect nearby. Officers arrested Ricky Amos, a 56-year-old resident of Richmond. The El Cerrito Police Department will pursue charges for battery and vandalism with a hate crime enhancement as well as charges for being out of compliance with sex offender registration requirements. Officers took Mr. Amos to the County Jail in Martinez.
