TIME: Approximately 7:10 P.M.
LOCATION: 112th Street and Lorraine Street, Lynwood
SUSPECT(S): Male Adults
HANDLING UNIT: Homicide Bureau – Lieutenant Charles Calderaro
NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into a deputy-involved shooting. The incident occurred at approximately 7:10 P.M. on Monday, August 30, 2021, in the city of Lynwood.
Deputies assigned to Century Station were flagged down by a citizen on the corner of Fernwood Ave. and Alameda Street, in the city of Lynwood. The citizen indicated he was the victim of a robbery, and was robbed at gunpoint. The victim provided deputies with a description of the suspects and vehicle, a black Dodge Ram pickup.
While speaking with the victim, the suspect vehicle emerged and proceeded northbound on Lorraine Street from Fernwood Avenue.
After briefly losing sight of the suspect vehicle, the deputies located it at the end of a cul-de-sac and the suspect vehicle subsequently made a u-turn and began driving towards the deputies. As the suspect vehicle approached the deputies, they were met with a barrage of gunfire from the suspects. Deputies immediately exited their vehicle and a deputy-involved-shooting occurred near 112th Street and Lorraine Street in the city of Lynwood.
Several rounds of gunfire were exchanged between the deputies and the suspect. During the exchange of gunfire, one of the deputies was struck in the upper body. The deputy was transported to a local hospital by an assisting unit. The deputy underwent surgery to remove the bullet and the deputy’s injury was non-life threatening.
One suspect was detained at the location and three handguns, believed to be possessed by the suspects during the incident were recovered at the scene.
During the ongoing investigation, deputies received information that a second suspect possibly fled the location in a white pickup truck. A short time later, assisting units were able to locate the pickup truck. Assisting Sheriff’s personnel initiated a pursuit of the suspect vehicle. The pursuit terminated at the intersection of the southbound 710 freeway off-ramp and Eastern Avenue, when it was involved in a traffic collision.
At the terminus of the pursuit, the suspect exited the vehicle, and as the deputies attempted to detain him, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was taken into custody and it was determined he was not struck by gunfire, but sustained injuries related to the traffic collision. He was transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
No deputies were injured during the pursuit or deputy-involved shooting.
There is no additional information available at this time.
Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee. Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
