ARMED BURGLARY SUSPECT SHOT BY OFF-DUTY OFFICER

Modesto, CA – An off-duty Modesto Police officer shot and wounded an armed burglary suspect after hearing an alarm sounding from a neighbor’s home.

At about 4:50 pm Modesto Police dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible burglary in progress at his neighbor’s Northeast Modesto home. Preliminary information seems to suggest that the off-duty officer confronted a male suspect on the neighbor’s property and that the suspect was armed with a weapon at the time of the encounter.

The officer fired at least one round and the suspect sustained what is believed to be non-life threatening wounds. Patrol officers arrived and took the man into custody. The suspect, described as a white man in his 20’s, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His identity and charges will be disclosed at a later time because his name has not yet been verified.

Investigators with the Modesto Police Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation. The involved officer was placed on paid administrative leave. Both are standard procedure for officer involved shooting incidents.

The name of the street where the incident occurred will not be released due to safety concerns for the officer.
