*UPDATE* #LASD - Homicide detectives responded to deputy-involved shooting, 44100 blk 48th Street West, Lancaster

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting.

The incident occurred on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at approximately 4:03PM, on the 44100 block of 48th Street West.

Homicide detectives have learned a Lancaster resident was decorating the outside of her home when she heard a disturbance nearby.  She noticed an adult male suspect standing a few houses from hers, yelling and causing a commotion.  She returned to her open garage and began putting decorations away.  A few moments later, she saw the suspect standing at the end of her driveway holding a knife.  The suspect began walking toward her, saying he was going to kill her.

She immediately placed a ladder between her and the suspect in an attempt to block him.  He continued to advance toward her, at which time she ran around her parked vehicle and exited her garage.  As she fled the garage, he continued to follow her.  While following her, the suspect noticed another neighbor standing outside.  The suspect then started walking toward the neighbor, saying he was going to kill them.

At this time, a deputy sheriff responding to a 911 call regarding the suspect, arrived at the location.  The deputy exited his patrol car and saw the suspect walking with a knife.  The suspect then started walking toward the deputy, saying he was going to kill the deputy.  The deputy repeatedly ordered the suspect to put the knife down.  The suspect refused to comply and continued advancing toward the deputy while holding the knife.  When the suspect was approximately ten feet from the deputy, a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck at least one time and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The knife was recovered at the scene.  There is no additional information at this time.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
