Water Main Break Update: Church Street and Aberdeen Court
A Message from the Haledon Office of Emergency Management
On behalf of Mayor Michael Johnson and Haledon Emergency Management Coordinator Carlos Aymat, please be advised that utility crews are actively working at both water main break locations on Church Street and Aberdeen Court and are making steady progress with repairs. They continue to work diligently to restore normal water service as safely and quickly as possible.
Why Water Main Breaks Are More Common This Time of Year?
Water main breaks occur more frequently during colder months due to freeze and thaw cycles. As the ground freezes and thaws, it expands and contracts, placing additional stress on underground water mains, particularly older infrastructure, making them more susceptible to cracking or failure.
How Residents Can Help Prevent Frozen Pipes and Water Issues at Home?
Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions during cold weather:
Allow faucets to drip slightly to keep water moving during extreme cold.
Insulate exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.
Keep cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
Maintain a consistent indoor temperature, even when away from home.
Know the location of your main water shutoff valve in case of an emergency.
Public Health Guidance for Residents With No Water or Low Water Pressure:
Public Health Guidance for Residents With No Water or Low Water Pressure:
Residents experiencing little or no water pressure are advised to follow these recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Use bottled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and food preparation whenever possible.
If tap water must be used and there is concern about water quality, bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before use.
Do not use ice from refrigerators or freezers unless it was made with boiled or bottled water.
Limit water use to essential needs only until normal service is restored.
When possible, store emergency water.
