DUI Round-Up, January 2012

In January 2012, SBPD made 54 arrests for driving under the influence violations. The following is information on a few of those cases.

1/31/12 at 12:50pm, Norma Jean Sunquist (age 72) backs into a parked vehicle in the Five Points Shopping Center at 3900 State Street. Officer A. Hill conducts the DUI investigation where Sundquist admits to drinking 1 glass of wine 3 hours earlier. Sundquist is arrested for DUI and provides a breath sample of .22 BAC (almost 3 times the legal limit).

1/29/12 at 11:10pm, Carl David Quinn (age 33) is observed making a right turn on a red light without stopping by Officers Klug and Maudlin. They conduct a traffic stop and after noting some signs of intoxication, conduct a DUI investigation. Quinn is arrested for DUI and admits to drinking “1 beer” at the Cliff Room. He provides a breath sample of .28 BAC (more than 3 times the legal limit).
1/28/12 at 1:24am, Alexander Johanson (age 23) is observed driving at a high rate of speed causing him to ‘fishtail’ at a turn and cross over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic, by Sgt. Rauch. He conducts a traffic stop and after noting signs of intoxication calls Officer J. Reyes to conduct a DUI investigation. Johanson is arrested for DUI and provides a breath test of .22 BAC.

1/26/12 at 8:44am, Robert Acosta Jr., is involved in a collision with another vehicle. Officer Corbett was dispatched and contacted the victim vehicle and driver. Officer Corbett was told by the victim that the passenger of the vehicle asked him to tell the police she was driving. Officer Corbett attempted to contact Robert Acosta Jr., only to have the passenger Ana Perez attempt to intervene in the investigation. Perez insisted she was driving the vehicle. Officer Corbett was able to obtain statements from Acosta that he was the driver as well as a positive identification by a witness that Acosta was the driver. Acosta was investigated and found to be too intoxicated to drive. He was placed under arrest for DUI and provided breath tests of .14 BAC and .13 BAC. He was booked for his 3rd DUI, violation of DUI probation and driving on a suspended license.

1/23/12 at 12:19am, Timothy McCoy (age 33), is contacted by Officer Washington when he attempts to drive through a DUI checkpoint being conducted in the city. McCoy is displaying signs of intoxication and is subsequently investigated for DUI. He is placed under arrest and booked into County Jail his 3rd DUI, suspended license and an out-of-county warrant for DUI. He provides breath tests of .18 BAC and .17 BAC.

1/08/12 at 1:50am, Christopher Lopez-Berry (age 23) is observed colliding with a parked vehicle in the 100 East block of Ortega Street by Officer B. Lazarus. Officer Lazarus notes that both airbags deploy during the traffic collision and immediately stops to render aid. She contacts the driver, Lopez-Berry who admits to driving without a license and is displaying signs of intoxication. Officer Tudor arrives and conducts a DUI investigation and subsequently places Lopez-Berry under arrest for DUI and driving without a license. Lopez-Berry provides a breath test of .19 BAC.
