The Heart of an Officer - OPD Squad Gives 11-year-old Crime Victim a Brand New Bike (names have been corrected)

Last week, Oakland Police officers arrested a man just out of prison for threatening his wife and 11-year-old daughter with a knife. This was not the beginning of the story, though.

Five years ago, when she was 6, the girl’s parents had been involved in a domestic violence incident. Her mother was stabbed, and her father went to prison. When her father was released last week, he returned home – and brandished a knife at her and her mother. Once again, he was arrested on charges of domestic violence.

Recognizing the youngster's fear and pain, the OPD officers who handled the arrest wanted to do something positive for her. And so it was that Officers Anna Sanchez, Alex Padilla, Louis Forneris, Ben Stolz, Kyle Hazen and Sergeant Mark Rowley pitched in and purchased a brand new bicycle for her. Last night, March 28, they delivered the bike to her and she took a trial spin under their protective watch.

A bicycle for an 11-year-old girl doesn’t solve everything, but it does let her – and her mother – know that kindness does exist.
