Message from the Office of Emergency Management:

Wet and windy period ahead for Santa Barbara County: A series of wet and windy storms are expected for Santa Barbara County today (Sunday) through Tuesday. Chance of flooding, especially in recent burn areas. Be prepared & use caution!

RAIN & POTENTIAL FLOODING

Rain is expected to spread across the area by Sunday evening, with the best chance of moderate (and possibly heavy) rain rates late Sunday evening to around noon on Monday. Forecast rainfall totals are estimated to be between .5 to 1.5 inches with 2 inches possible for southwest facing mountain slopes and foothills. There is a potential for flash flooding and debris flows around recent burn areas if heavier rain rates occur.

WINDS

Gusty south to southwest winds should peak around 50 mph over the mountains and some interior sections of the County late Sunday night through Monday. Additional generally light rain is possible Tuesday through Wednesday.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS

  • Potential for flash flooding and debris flows for recent burn areas.
  • Minor threat of mud and rock slides, especially in steep canyon areas.
  • Potential for localized urban and small stream flooding.
  • Potential for reduced visibility due to fog.
  • Travel delays likely due to reduced visibilities and slick roads, especially for the Monday morning commute.
  • Risk of downed trees (and isolated downed power lines) due to gusty winds and wet soils.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

  • Be alert: Be alert to signs of flooding, especially if you live in a flood-prone area, and be ready to evacuate if flooding occurs. Floods can happen quickly and you may need to leave with little or no notice.
  • Use caution when driving: Fog, wind, and slick roads can make driving difficult, especially during downpours, periods of reduced visibility, and for high profile vehicles. Drive with caution at all times.
  • Avoid already flooded areas, and areas subject to sudden flooding: Do not attempt to cross flowing streams. Most flood fatalities are caused by people attempting to drive through water, or people playing in high water. The depth of water is not always obvious. The roadbed may be washed out under the water, and you could be stranded or trapped. Rapidly rising water may stall the engine, engulf the vehicle and its occupants, and sweep them away. Look out for flooding at highway dips, bridges, and low areas. Two feet of water will carry away most automobiles. Remember, turn around. Don’t drown.
  • Watch for falling trees & downed power lines: Windy conditions and saturated soil increase the possibility of downed trees and power lines. Stay away from fallen or dangling power lines. Don’t touch the lines. Call 911 immediately.
