SCHOOL SAFETY MESSAGE FROM Lancaster Sheriff's Station

Recent tragic events nationwide have understandably increased anxiety and concern regarding safety at our schools. We would like our residents to know that Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, along with our Department, diligently works hand in hand with the staff and administration at all of our Antelope Valley Union High School District schools to create the safest schools possible.

Every threat, whether it be verbal or on social media is taken seriously by our deputies and investigated immediately and thoroughly. Our investigations have shown that a large majority of these threats are made by students as a “joke” or “prank”. Our deputies MUST treat every threat as real. This is significantly exhausting our resources. PARENTS: This is where we need YOUR help! Talk to your students about the serious consequences of making these types of “jokes” and “pranks”. Regardless of their intention, these threats are unlawful and it is important our children know that.

It is also crucial that parents, teachers and administrators take action when necessary. Here is what parents and guardians can do to help:

*Ensure your child/student knows and understand the severity of making a false threat. Our deputies cannot tell that their comment is a “joke” until it has been investigated. There could be criminal, civil, financial and administrative consequences at both school level and Sheriff’s Department level.

*Stay connected and monitor your child/student’s social media activities. Direct messages on sites such as Instagram and Facebook allow your child to send/receive private messages. Don’t forget to CHECK THOSE!

*Reach out to your principal, deputies or other trained professionals if you see behavior indicative of self-harm or harm to others.

*Please, please ensure that if you own a firearm, it is kept locked and secured. This is the law.

*If you see or hear something, SAY SOMETHING! Our schools and community’s safety is everyone’s responsibility.
