Traffic Stop in Sebastopol nets drugs, handgun and parolee.

An alert Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested a 44-year-old parolee after finding drugs and a handgun in his car. The traffic stop occurred at about 2:00 AM this morning as a deputy spotted a silver Mercedes sedan with an obstructed license plate in the area of Hwy 116 and Woodworth Rd in the Hessel area, south of Sebastopol.

The driver, Glenn Marrifield of Larkfield, was slow to pull over and swerved several times acting is if he was going to pull over before he finally did. The deputy became suspicious as Marrifield quickly exited his car as soon as he stopped. Marrifield was confronted by the deputy and was placed into handcuffs while the deputy determined he was on county parole and had two active cases of probation for drug related charges.

A search of Merrifield’s car revealed numerous syringes. One syringe was loaded with liquefied methamphetamine. Also found in the car was a pill bottle with crystal methamphetamine and a scale which is commonly used for weighing drugs. Under the front passenger seat the deputy found a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun, loaded with seven bullets. Merrifield, being a convicted felon, is not legally allowed to own or possess a firearm.

Merrifield claimed no knowledge of the gun and drugs, stating he had only possessed the car for a couple of days and was looking to purchase it for his mother.

Merrifield was booked into the county jail on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of drugs while armed, possession of methamphetamine, possession of syringes, violation of post release community supervision, violation of probation. He is being held without bail pending a 1:30 PM arraignment tomorrow.
