SCPD Chief of Department Stuart Cameron Presented With Award From School Superintendents Association

Suffolk County Police Chief of Department Stuart Cameron was presented the Friend of the Association award by the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association for his commitment to school safety during the association’s meeting on September 13.

Chief Cameron has dedicated much of his career to improving safety in Suffolk County schools. During his career, he has trained hundreds of school administrators and security staff in various aspects of school security. He has also trained county fire and EMS personnel on how to coordinate their response to a potential active shooter incident at school facilities. Chief Cameron has developed and delivered, on multiple occasions, a comprehensive tabletop exercise to better coordinate and improve school safety in Suffolk County.

The Friend of the Association award is the most prestigious award given by the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association and is reserved for individuals or organizations that advance the goals and mission of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association and education in the region.

“Chief Cameron has been a leader in the area of school safety for more than two decades and is a tremendous resource in developing and presenting innovative evidence based approaches to school safety issues,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart, who attended the event, said. “His dedication to keeping children safe and being prepared for the unthinkable is evident to members within the police department and it is an honor to have him recognized by the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association.”

Chief Cameron has also authored numerous journal articles which have appeared in Tactical Edge Magazine, The Police Chief Magazine and The Associate Magazine, the magazine of the FBI National Academy Associates Inc.

“The Suffolk County Police Department has partnered with our schools for many years with the primary goal being the prevention of an act of mass violence in a school.  While prevention is our main objective, we also have a long history of preparing our officers should they ever need to respond to an event of this nature.  This preparation has been multifaceted and comprehensive, leveraging partnerships with other public safety agencies and school administrators.”  Chief Cameron said.  “I value the working relationships that our department has developed with school administrators and I thank the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association for this prestigious recognition.”
