Cases of Community Interest

Here are some cases that occurred over the past few days that may be of interest.
 
On December 5th at 7:15 pm, a man and woman were walking in an off-street parking lot at San Pablo Avenue and University Avenue when a suspect ran up to them—grabbing her digital camera from her bag and then running away.  The suspect was described as an African American male, wearing dark clothing.

On December 6th at 5:24 am, a suspect entered the 7-11 store (1501 University Avenue) armed with a handgun—demanding money.  When the suspect realized that the police were on their way, he quickly fled the store.  The suspect was described as a White male, about 5’7” to 5’9” tall wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

On December 6th at 4:25 am, officers responded to Raleigh’s Bar & Grill on a report of man in the rear who was naked and throwing things around.  When officers arrived, they discovered that the suspect broke inside the closed business and caused an estimated $8K-10K worth of damage (broken doors, glassware, beer taps, spilled beer, etc).  The suspect (Andrew Francis Cullen, Male, 31 years old, Berkeley, CA) was taken into custody without incident and arrested on suspicion of felony Burglary and Vandalism.

On December 6th at 4:50 pm, two teens (a boy and a girl) were hanging out near the fountain in Civic Center Park when a suspect approached them and demanded the boy’s cell phone or be shot.  After the suspect took the phone, the suspect walked away and was last seen entering the Downtown BART station.
 
The suspect was described as an African American male, 19-21 years old, about 5-10, with a goatee, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

On December 8th at 12:37 pm, a woman was sitting on Shattuck Avenue (near Delaware Street) when a man asked if he could use her cell phone.  The woman agreed and handed the man her cell phone.  After a brief few moments, the man ran away with the woman’s cell phone.  The woman chased the man—yelling for help.  Other bystanders also chased the man and called BPD.  When officers arrived, they located the suspect in the area of Berkeley Way and Bonita Avenue.  When officers searched the man, they located her stolen cell phone as well as several burglary tools.  Though the victim declined to press charges for theft, the suspect (Darren Daniel Cruz, Male, 25 years old, Homeless) was arrested on suspicion of possession of burglary tools as well as an outstanding arrest warrant from Santa Clara County for battery.

On December 9th at about 3 pm, a 15 year old girl was walking on Shattuck Avenue (near Berkeley Way) when she walked by a woman sitting on a blanket.  The woman got upset when the girl accidentally stepped on her blanket while she was walking passed her.  When the woman stood up and looked at the girl, she made a comment about her breasts and then touched them.  The girl then left the area and later called BPD.  Officers responded to the area and located the suspect nearby.  Antoinette Marie Archimedes, Female, 53 years old, Homeless was arrested for suspicion of sexual battery and violation of probation.

On December 10th at 10:11 pm, a woman was walking on the 1700 block of LeRoy Avenue when a car pulled up next to her and two suspects got out of the car.  When one of the suspects tried to grab onto the woman, the woman dropped her backpack and ran away.  The suspects took her backpack and drove away—last seen driving north on LeRoy Avenue.  Witnesses describe the suspects (unknown race) as two men 18-25 years old, about 5-10 tall, wearing dark clothing.

On December 13th at 3:23 am, officers responded to 1823 Fourth Store after receiving multiple burglar alarm activations.  When officers arrived, they discovered a U-Haul truck abandoned (engine still running) that had been driven into the glass front doors of the business.  The inner metal security gate/screen for the business remained intact and it does not appear that the suspect(s) were able to gain entry.

On December 13th at 9:50 am, officers responded to the Downtown area on a report of stolen vehicle in the area.  When officers arrived, they spotted the vehicle leaving westbound from the area.  Officers successfully stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver at a gas station parking lot on the corner of University Avenue and Bonar Street.  After the arrest, the suspect told officers that he had a “digital weapon” inside the vehicle that was potentially explosive.
 
Out of an abundance of caution, nearby buildings were temporarily evacuated while BPD’s Bomb technicians checked the van.  By 11:11 am, officers determined that the van was empty and there was no threat to the public.
 
The suspect (Joseph Edward Coleman, Male, 27 years old, Berkeley, CA) was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission and possession of stolen property.
