Deputies arrest man in Healdsburg assault with hatchet.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a 19-year-old Santa Rosa man after a fight involving a hatchet. At about 3:00 PM yesterday deputies were called to a residence in the 700 block of Dry Creek Rd in Healdsburg. The caller originally stated a man had been hit in the neck with an axe. When deputies arrived they found that a group of men had already detained the suspect, Emanuel Gudino. Deputies took him into custody and interviewed the victim who is a 40-year old resident of the Dry Creek Rd home, witnesses and Gudino.

Deputies determined that the victim and Gudino have worked construction together for several years and haven’t had a problem with each other until this time. Gudino had taken the victim’s truck earlier in the day without permission and when he tried to fuel it up at a Healdsburg Valero station, he gave cash to the teller. The teller determined Gudino’s cash to be counterfeit. Gudino then called the victim to come pay for the gas, which he did. Gudino didn’t realize his money was counterfeit as it had been given to him by someone else. Gudino and the victim went back to the property on Dry Creek Road where they argued over the incident at the Valero station.

As the argument progressed, Gudino reached into the truck and pulled an approximate 6” hatchet out of the victim’s work truck and threatened the victim with it. The victim attempted to take it away and the two fell to the ground struggling for possession of the hatchet. The victim was able to regain possession of the hatchet and was then able to get away from Gudino.

The victim ran away with Gudino in pursuit. Witnesses at the home saw the chase and the victim yelling for help. One witness tackled Gudino and when he was allowed up, Gudino threw a punch at a window in anger and broke it with his fist. Several others at the home then assisted by corralling him until deputies arrived.

The victim suffered a laceration about 2” long behind his ear. He was treated by EMT’s from an ambulance crew who advised him to go to the hospital for sutures. Gudino experienced chest pain and was transported by deputies to a local hospital where he was evaluated by medical staff. He was then released from the hospital, ultimately being booked into the county jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, threats and vandalism. He is being held without bail as he violated the terms of his probation on a previous burglary case.

The victim’s name is not being released as he is the victim of a violent crime.
