March is National Self-Harm Awareness Month. At today’s Coffee with a Deputy, Lieutenant Fender, Sergeant Rhea and Deputy Deciga brought up warning signs for parents.

So what is self harm? Self harm or self injury is a non suicidal act of purposefully and repeatedly harming one’s body. In recent years, it has become a rising trend amongst teens. 

Online and social media “challenges” are also encouraging teens and tweens to harm themselves. The Momo Challenge, that first drew attention in 2017, has recently resurfaced, this time targeting kids as young as 4 and 5 years old. The challenge encourages children to harm themselves, “winning” the game by ultimately committing suicide. The “48 Hour Challenge” encourages tweens to go missing for 48 hours, earning points for how many shares, posts and hashtags they get mentioning the fact they are missing. 

While this may be a troubling and scary topic to bring up, it’s important to be aware and speak to your child about it.

As we say with our community, if you see something, say something; the same applies to your home! If you see something changing with your child, their behavior or attitude, say something! Open lines of communication will help your child/teen know they can turn to you for help.
