This afternoon, San Leandro Police arrested two men following an auto burglary, high-speed car chase and foot pursuit across Interstate 580 in Oakland.  

At 1:50PM, two sergeants, assigned to the Department’s Patrol Division were patrolling San Leandro’s downtown business district, when they spotted a gold-colored Honda Accord speeding out of the downtown Washington Plaza shopping center.  The sergeants were concerned that a violent crime had just occurred, as the back window of the Honda had been smashed out and several patrons in the shopping center were pointing at the car as it fled.  

The sergeants reacted quickly and tried to stop the Honda, which continued to flee, increasing its speed as it headed towards Interstate 580.  Some officers responded to assist in the pursuit, while others checked for victims at the Washington Plaza.  

The sergeants pursued the vehicle as it entered I-580 towards Oakland and continued to flee in that direction.  The Honda exited and re-entered the freeway a few times as it continued in its attempt to elude the pursuing officers.  

The Honda finally exited the freeway at the MacArthur Blvd. / Seminary Ave. exit, where it became disabled after crashing into another vehicle in a construction zone.  The driver, later identified as 23 year old Sergio Chavez-Silva and his passenger, 30 year old Byron Perez-Olivera, both of Oakland, ran from the vehicle and fled across the east and west-bound freeway lanes, with the two sergeants following at a safe distance.  

Chavez-Silva was found hiding in the bushes on the freeway off-ramp and was arrested by the sergeants.  Perez-Silva, who was also on probation for previous burglary conviction, was found walking near a Shell gas station on Seminary Ave. and was arrested by SLPD officers.  

Officers investigating the incident at the Washington Plaza determined that the men had broken into a truck parked near the Sizzler restaurant, and fled after being confronted by witnesses, who smashed out the back window of the Honda, before it sped out of the parking lot.  

“Auto burglaries are common crimes that have been occurring in most cities throughout the Bay Area, with tools, computers, cell phones and purses being stolen regularly.  The San Leandro Police have increased patrols throughout the City to prevent and deter this type of crime, as well as apprehend offenders,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.  “Today’s situation was very dangerous for everyone involved.  We are glad that this ended without anyone injured,” he said.

Detectives will interview both men about today’s incident and also speak with detectives from other SF Bay Area law enforcement agencies to determine if either of them are responsible for any other crimes.  Due to the continuing investigation, photographs of the two men arrested in San Leandro are not being released at this time, as detectives are continuing their investigation.  

Both men have been arrested by police on suspicion of auto burglary.  Police will seek additional charges against Chavez-Silva, the driver of the Honda that led the sergeants on the high-speed pursuit.  Perez-Silva is also being held for a violation of his probation.  Both men will be transferred to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, and will be arraigned in the Alameda County Superior Court later this week.
