INCIDENT: Search and Rescue at Amboy Crater

LOCATION: Amboy Crater National Landmark

VICTIM: 12-year-old male, resident of Moreno Valley

SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, Andrea Tucker took her grandchildren on a day trip to Amboy Crater. During the hike they became separated. Around 2:00 p.m., the 12 year old's sister returned to the parking lot alone, believing her brother had already returned. Tucker contacted law enforcement after her grandson did not return.

At approximately 2:12 p.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was contacted by the Bureau of Land Management reference the missing 12 year old boy. Deputies responded to the Amboy Crater, along with Sheriff's Aviation Division and tracking canines to search for the missing boy.

At approximately 4:51 p.m., Sheriff's dispatch center was contacted by an employee from Roy's Café who reported a child walked into the location alone. The child was identified as the missing boy from the Amboy Crater. Deputies responded to Roy's Café and found the boy to be in good health and did not require any medical attention. He was reunited with his grandmother and sister.

The Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station would like to remind the public to exercise extreme caution when visiting the Amboy Crater. Extreme weather conditions sometimes exist at the site. Frequently hikers become disoriented and lost after separating from their hiking companions. Be sure to bring plenty of water, food, and a fully charged cellular phone. Notify family or friends of your planned hiking location, route, and expected return time in case of emergency.
