Heat Safety Tips: National Weather Service forecasts high temperatures over the weekend through next week.
The National Weather Service Charleston forecasts a heat wave for our area over the weekend through next week.
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid to high 90s with heat indices/indexes of over 100 degrees.
In anticipation of these high temperatures, please read the following heat safety tips:
- Do not schedule physical activities outdoors—especially strenuous activities—until the coolest time of the day.
- Drink plenty of water, non-alcoholic and decaffeinated fluids.
- Wear lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing.
- Minimize direct exposure to the sun. If you must be outdoors, use plenty of sunscreen with a high SPF rating.
- Check on family members and neighbors, who may be more susceptible to high temperatures.
- Do not leave people or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short period of time, as a vehicle's interior can quickly reach dangerously high temperatures.
- Be conscious of the symptoms heat related illnesses, which include the following: Exhaustion; heavy sweating; weakness; cool, pale and clammy skin; fast, weak pulse; muscle cramps; dizziness; nausea or vomiting; throbbing headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness and/or shallow breathing; body temperature above 103 degrees; hot, red, dry or moist skin; rapid and strong pulse; fainting and/or loss of consciousness.
