93 yr old man robbed and assaulted - female suspect arrested

San Leandro Police detectives arrested an Oakland woman after a two-day investigation into a robbery and assault case against a 93 yr old elderly male.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, May 28th, 2019, at the 7-11 convenience store located at 333 E14th St. in San Leandro. Police officers were dispatched to the location around 1:30 am, after a report that an elderly man had been robbed and injured. Paramedics were also sent to the scene.

Officers arrived and found a 93 yr-old man who sustained minor injuries after being knocked to the ground and robbed of his wallet. The victim's wife was also present who witnessed the attack.

The victim stated that he went to the store to buy coffee with his wife. After paying for the coffee, the victim exited the store with his wallet in hand. Once outside the store, the victim stated he was walking to his car when he was suddenly attacked from behind and felt his wallet being pulled from his hand. The force knocked the victim to the ground as the suspect ripped the wallet from the victim’s grip.

Several people were standing outside the store when the incident occurred and one man came to the victim’s aid by assisting him to his feet.

Officers were able to obtain clear video surveillance of the incident which shows the crime taking place and the suspect fleeing the scene.

SLPD detectives resumed the investigation and were able to gather suspect vehicle information from the surveillance video.

On Wednesday morning, May 28th, detectives located the suspect’s vehicle parked in the McDonald’s restaurant on 98th Ave. in Oakland. The vehicle was occupied by the suspect who committed the crime, 48 yr old Oakland resident, Carla Ashford. SLPD detectives and officers were able to safely detain the suspect who was later transported to SLPD for questioning.

Detectives proceeded to interview the suspect who ultimately confessed to taking the victim’s wallet after seeing the cash in his hands.

“This is a disturbing video to watch,” said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. “It’s heartbreaking to know that there are people out there that have no hesitation to commit such an act against a frail, defenseless person. We know that crimes happen, but with this suspect, there are no barriers. She is now behind bars.”

Ashford has been booked on felony charges that include Robbery and Elder Abuse. The case will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office tomorrow.

Ashford remains in custody at Alameda County’s San Rita Jail in Dublin.
