On June 17, 2019 at 2:20 AM, APD officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the west bound lanes of 4000 west IH-40. A 2010 Mini Cooper driven by Shawn Alan Villegas, a 28 year old male of Amarillo, had been westbound on I-40. Villegas lost control of the vehicle striking the cement wall dividing the highway. This caused the Mini Cooper to roll numerous times. Villegas died on scene as a result of injuries received in the accident. A 44 year old female passenger was taken to a local area hospital with possible life threatening injuries. Speed is a factor in this crash. Alcohol is a possible factor. The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
