Three-vehicle traffic collision leaves one in critical condition

COSTA MESA, Calif. – A traffic collision that occurred today, June 28, 2019, left one driver in critical condition. At approximately 9:45 a.m., Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) officers and Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to a traffic collision involving three vehicles on Newport Boulevard between 20th Streetand Bay Street. A 76-year-old male driver in a pickup truck was traveling east on Bay Street when it was struck by a 46-year-old female driver in an SUV going north on Newport Boulevard. As a result of that collision, the truck then struck a third vehicle, a sedan being driven by a 75-year-old woman, that was preparing to exit a parking lot north of the intersection. The driver in the pickup truck was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The SUV driver was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The CMPD Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. They were on-scene until approximately 3:45 p.m., at which time the roads were clear for traffic. The cause of this traffic collision is still under investigation. At this point, there is no arrest or citation attached to this incident.
