VIRTUAL EVACUATION EXERCISE

On Saturday, January 11th, 8:30 a.m., the Moraga Police Department, MOFD, and the Community Warning System (CWS) will be carrying out a virtual evacuation notification exercise in the Bluffs and Bollinger areas. This exercise is being organized in coordination with neighborhood groups to accomplish the following objectives:

1. Increase awareness of the CWS in a vulnerable neighborhood.
2. Test elements of the notification system under real work conditions.
3. Refine our understanding of how residents receive evacuation orders.
4. Set the stage for recurring district wide virtual evacuation exercises.

If you have not done so already, please register for the Community Warning System at www.cws.com. The CWS is the primary system that will be used to issue evacuation orders during an emergency and signing up is the first step in preparing for an evacuation. Every member of your household should register separately to increase the number of mobile numbers that are being contacted.

This exercise is a virtual evacuation drill with a focus on notification. Upon receipt of the message, we encourage all residents to go through the steps they would take in the event of a real evacuation, up to the point that they are ready to drive away. At a minimum this should include:

1. Gather your family members and any pets you intend to evacuate.
2. Ensure you have critical, readily available items such as car keys, wallets, cell phone with charger, and medications.
3. Activate your neighborhood notification system or phone tree to ensure your neighbors are aware of the evacuation.
4. Get in your car, pull out to the end of the driveway, and close the garage door and any other doors you may have left open.

More information regarding evacuation preparedness is available at https://lamorindacert.org/resource/evacuate/  For questions, please contact the Moraga Police Department at 925-888-7055 or the Moraga-Orinda Fire District at 925-258-4599.

Following the exercise, a web link will be distributed to allow residents to provide feedback on the effectiveness of the system. This feedback is tremendously valuable as we seek to refine our systems in advance of a real event.

The information is being distributed Town-wide to increase awareness of emergency preparedness activities.  Your participation in the event is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
