Cases of Community Interest

Every month, there are numerous crimes (UCR Part 1 crimes) occurring in the City of Berkeley.  Below are some of those cases that have occurred over the past few days that involve weapons, violence or incidents that people have asked us about.

Strong-Arm Robbery
On February 24th at about 8:30 pm, a man was walking east on Derby Street (approaching College Avenue) when a suspect attacked him—knocking the man to the ground and taking his backpack.  The man was taken to a local hospital for injuries to his head.
 
Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, 20-30 years old, about 5’10” tall, wearing a white jacket and a dark-colored cap—last seen driving away in a dark sedan.

Attempted Robbery
On February 24th at 9:10 pm, a man was walking east on Dwight Way (between Regent Street and Hillegass Avenue) when a suspect asked him for money.  When the man continued walking, the suspect grabbed the man and tried to punch him.  The man was able to avoid the punch and ran away.
 
The suspect was described as a White or Hispanic male, 20-30 years old, about 6’0” tall, wearing gray clothing.

Downtown Robbery
On February 25th at 2:35 pm, a man was standing outside a restaurant on University Avenue (near Milvia Street) using his cellphone when a suspect quickly approached him.  The suspect grabbed the cellphone from the man and ran away.  Officers later found the suspect inside the Downtown BART station along with the stolen cellphone.
 
The suspect (a 22-year-old man, no address) was arrested on suspicion of robbery and violation of probation.

Man attacked on Adeline Street in the early morning hours
On February 26th at 4:08 am, an 80-year-old man was walking north with his bicycle on Adeline Street (just passed Alcatraz Avenue) when a suspect who was sleeping in a nearby doorway yelled at him.  The suspect approached the man, accused the man of taking his belongings and began punching the man repeatedly.  When the man fell to the ground, the suspect briefly walked away to where he had been sleeping.  Moments later, the suspect returned with a waist belt.  The suspect then kicked the man in his side and repeatedly struck him with the belt.
 
The victim was transported to a local hospital with several bruises on his body.
 
The suspect was described as a Black male, in his late 30’s, about 5’10” tall, with a bald head.

Café Laptop Robbery
On February 26th at 8:50 pm, a woman was seated inside U-Cha (2199 Bancroft Way) using her laptop when a suspect approached her from behind and took her laptop.  When the woman and others chased after the suspect, the suspect abandoned the laptop on top of a parked car and continued running.
 
Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, 20-25 years old, wearing a yellow long-sleeve shirt and dark pants.

Suspect arrested after nighttime residential Hot Prowl Burglary
On February 27th at 3:54 am, officers responded to the area of Brookside Drive and Claremont Avenue for an in-progress residential burglary.  The resident awoke to the sound of their bedroom’s door opening and saw a light flashing at their door.  The resident then heard the sound of someone quickly running down the staircase.  Securing themselves inside the bedroom, the resident dialed 911.
 
Arriving moments later, officers spotted the suspect running from the area and chased after him. Shortly thereafter, officers found the suspect hiding behind some bushes a few houses away.
 
When officers searched the suspect, they discovered several stolen credit cards along with a stolen key fob.
 
The suspect (a 25-year-old Oakland man) was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

Interrupted Daytime Burglary
On February 28th at 12:40 pm, officers responded to the 300 block of Vassar Avenue for an in-progress residential burglary.  While returning home, the resident discovered that the glass of their front door was broken.  When the resident stepped inside, they heard footsteps from the upper level.  When the suspect ran out of the house, the resident saw the suspect get into a waiting white sedan.
 
Witnesses described the suspect as a White or Hispanic man, 30-40 years old, about 5’8” tall, with a heavy build, wearing a white t-shirt and baggy jeans.

Gunfire Heard
Just after midnight on March 3rd, officers responded to the 2600 block of Durant Avenue after receiving a report of gunfire in the area.  When officers arrived, they did not find anyone struck by gunfire.
