Deputies responded to a plane down east of Essex; plane ran out of fuel and the pilot made an emergency landing

DATE/TIME: March 4, 2020 / 8:37 pm

INCIDENT: Plane Crash

LOCATION: Stepladder Mountains, Essex

VICTIM: Jewel Dixon Jr., 86 years old, resident of Las Vegas, Nevada

SUMMARY:
On March 4, 2020 at approximately 8:37 pm, deputies from the Colorado River Station were notified of a possible downed plane. It was discovered that Jewel Dixon had run out of fuel while piloting his fixed wing, single engine Cessna. Dixon was forced to conduct an emergency landing approximately 20 miles south of the I-40 freeway in the BLM area of the Stepladder Mountains east of Essex. Upon landing, Dixon's aircraft flipped over and came to rest upside down. Sheriff's Aviation Division responded to the crash site and discovered Dixon had sustained only minor injuries. Sheriff's Aviation personnel retrieved Dixon and flew him to awaiting deputies at the intersection of Water Road and I-40. There, he was evaluated by paramedics and transported to the Colorado River Medical Center for further treatment.
