COVID-19 UPDATE

Today, the Contra Costa County Health Department reported there are now 71 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the county.  This is an increase of 25 since Friday, which is more than a 50% jump.  Many articles have noted that it is too late to attempt to contain this virus – social distancing is designed to limit the spread, which is what we all need to consistently do. Although it is believed that the number of positive cases will continue to increase, through social distancing, we can work together to moderate these increases.

The County Health Officer’s order of March 16th and the subsequent order from the Governor both allow people to “engage in outdoor activity, provided the individuals comply with Social Distancing Requirements…”  Over the weekend, the Police Department received complaints about many violations of these orders.  Please remember that this is not a vacation, a time for our kids to gather together for play dates or hanging out, or for all of us to have neighborhood gatherings.  We all need to work together, shelter-in-place and practice social distancing.

Additionally, both the orders from the County and the Governor list a number of essential functions and businesses that can remain open during these orders.  Some of those essential functions are restaurants, food stores and hardware stores.  Please continue to shop and dine at our local businesses that also need our support!  Check the Moraga Chamber of Commerce website for a list of open businesses (www.moragachamber.org).

Current information about the COVID-19 situation, including information about the Health Officer’s order, which is a legally enforceable order, can be found on the Health Department website at www.coronavirus.cchealth.org or by calling 844-729-8410.  A copy of the order and a list of frequently asked questions are attached for your information.

Don’t forget about your neighbors, especially those who are over 65 years old or have other high risk issues and are sheltering.  There’s a very good chance they need some help with shopping, errands or other issues.  I have heard many stories of people in our community who are lending a helping hand.  This is one of the things that makes Moraga a great community.  Please continue to reach out and help your neighbors.

Lastly, please remember that your first responders are also taking precautions to avoid being exposed to COVID-19.  Police and Fire personnel may be wearing protective equipment when responding to calls.  Dispatchers will question you when you call in about a sick person and are requesting help...please tell them how the person is sick and provide any history that you may have.  Through your help, our first responders can protect themselves and remain ready to assist others in our community.

Please continue to support each other and our community during these challenging times.  Remember, the efforts that we put forth today can lessen the spread of COVID-19 and potentially reduce the time we all have to shelter-in-place.  Thank you for helping us to keep our community safe.  Stay healthy!!!
