DATE/TIME: March 31, 2020 / 3:11 p.m.

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision

LOCATION: State Highway 18 east of Apple Valley Road, Town of Apple Valley

INVOLVED VEHICLE (1): Light blue 2002 Chrysler Town and Country

INVOLVED VEHICLE (2): Brown 2014 Toyota Rav4

INVOLVED VEHICLE (3): Gray 2012 Toyota Highlander

INVOLVED VEHICLE (4): White 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan

SUMMARY: On March 31, 2020, at about 3:11 p.m., deputies from the Apple Valley Station Traffic Division, emergency personnel from the Apple Valley Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to a four-vehicle traffic collision on State Highway 18 east of Apple Valley Road in the Town of Apple Valley.

Through preliminary investigation, it was believed that the light blue 2002 Chrysler Town and Country minivan and the brown 2014 Toyota Rav4 SUV were both westbound on State Highway 18 east of Apple Valley Road. The Rav4 was slowing for traffic when it was rear-ended by the Chrysler. This caused the Rav4 to veer left into the eastbound lanes of State Highway 18 and into the path of the Toyota Highlander SUV. The Rav4 and Highlander collided head-on in the eastbound lanes. A Dodge Grand Caravan minivan was also traveling eastbound and is believed to have collided into the Highlander. The Rav4 rolled onto its driver side trapping a 73-year-old female driver inside.

As a result of these collisions, all four vehicles sustained major damage. The driver of the Rav4 was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Dodge was transported by ground ambulance to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The drivers of the Chrysler and Highlander sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The collision is being investigated by the Apple Valley Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
