The City of Union City had several businesses vandalized and looted this evening. Unfortunately criminals targeted multiple businesses throughout the City, breaking windows and doors to get inside and steal property.
Several groups of criminals specifically targeted Union Landing and arrived in large vans and trucks with the clear intent to commit crimes. Thankfully officers were circulating in the area and responded quickly, clearing many of the looters. We requested the assistance of Union City Public Works and the Alameda County Fire Department to fill water barricades and to limit entry and exit points into the complex.
Earlier in the day, while supporting a mutual aid request in San Leandro, one of our officers was shot in the hand by a ricochet bullet. Fortunately, the bullet hit a protective glove and our officer sustained only minor injures.
A member of our Public Works family was also injured, after being hit in the head with a bottle that was thrown at him.
The City of Union City will be implementing a curfew starting this evening, Monday, June 1st. Details in regard to the curfew will be provided to the community a little later today.
