Criminal Activity Advisory

During the late evening and early morning hours of 09-01-10 and 09-02-10, the City of Avondale Estates experienced two residential burglaries, one on Kensington Road (3100 block) and the other on Banbury Cross. The incident on Banbury Cross included the theft of a vehicle after removing the keys from the residence.

On 09-02-10, at approximately 3:55AM, an AEPD officer observed and stopped a suspicious person on Kensington Road carrying a couple of storage cases. After stopping the individual and upon the officer approaching the suspect, the suspect fled towards Stratford Road. AEPD officers gave pursuit and DeKalb County PD units assisted. The suspect was not apprehended and remains at large. The property taken from the Kensington Road incident (camera equipment and laptop computers) was recovered by AEPD officers. The AEPD officer who initially encountered the suspect did so approximately two houses down from the incident location. Neither incident location revealed signs of forced entry. Incidents of Entering Auto were also reported, possibly related to the fleeing suspect as well.

The suspect was described as:

Black male - dark complexion
Neatly dressed - wearing a white colored long sleeved dress shirt and black/dark colored dress pants.
Approximately 5'10" tall, 160-180 pounds, slender build
Short cropped Afro hairstyle and no facial hair
Age estimated to be in late teens to early twenties

The Avondale Estates Police Department has increased the number of patrol units during the evening hours and adjusted its patrol procedures to address the situation. Citizens are requested to assist the AEPD in its efforts by:

* Locking their homes and vehicles.
* Using alarms systems in both their homes and
vehicles (if applicable).
* Leave lights on in their driveways and carports.
* Removing all valuables from their vehicles when not
in use.
* Removing items of value from in front of residence
windows which can be observed from outside.

Our residents are also being asked to be extra vigilant and to report all suspicious persons and vehicles to 911 immediately. Investigation of the incidents is on-going and any persons having possible information that may be of assistance are asked to contact Inv. Tom Gillis at (404) 391-4526.
