Please check the Town of Beloit Nixle agency page for an important safety reminder about stopped school bus laws.
With school back in session, motorists are reminded that when approaching a stopped school bus displaying flashing red warning lights, they must stop not less than 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the operator extinguishes the flashing red warning lights. Failure to do so could result in a fine between $30 and $300.
This law does not apply to vehicles driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway but does apply if no barrier is present on a multi-lane street or highway.
This has been a particular problem on Riverside Drive, between the Newark bridge and Inman Parkway. This is NOT considered a divided highway. Cars MUST stop for a school bus stopped on the opposite side of the highway, or they will be ticketed.
Please help keep our school children safe by watching out for school busses and crossing children.
