Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with. Topic Four: When should I change my smoke detector’s battery?
CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS--CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES. The Chula Vista Fire Department would like to remind you that the day when you change your clocks for daylight savings time is the perfect opportunity to change the batteries in your smoke alarms. So when you set your clocks back on November 7, use the extra hour to make a life-saving change in your household—change and test those batteries. Also, remind your friends, family and neighbors to do the same.
When smoke alarms fail, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the households with non-working smoke alarms now outnumber those with no smoke alarms. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and MAINTAINED play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. As most fatal fires occur at night, by taking the time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms, you can sleep better knowing that you've provided one of the best ways to alert those in your household should a fire occur.
Remember, almost every day a smoke alarm saves someone's life.
