Film Title: AALTRA
WEDNESDAY, October 6, 2010
Civic Center Branch
5 pm, Auditorium

AALTRA- (Belgium) Comedians Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern, who wrote, directed, and co-star in this irreverent road movie, show a distinct flair for understated physical comedy and defiantly non-PC humor. Rural neighbors who hate each other come to blows one day on a farm and get tangled up in an agricultural tractor, leaving them both paralyzed, wheelchair-bound, and simmering with spite. But rather than feel sorry for themselves, the embittered paraplegics decide to seek revenge against the tractor's manufacturer. They take to the road, redirecting their frustrations with their plights towards the people they meet on the way to Helsinki. Captured in sharp black-and-white Cinemascope photography that complements its exquisite Tati-like sight gags, Aaltra undermines conventional attitudes toward the disabled with its dry wit and acerbic, vengeful characters. Look for some recognizable cameos, including famous Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. Comedy. French, Dutch, English and Finnish w/ English Subtitles. 90 minutes.

Film Title: GIGANTE
Wednesday, October 6, 2010
South Branch
5 pm, Room B

GIGANTE - (Uruguay) Jara is a shy and lonely 35-year-old security guard at a supermarket on the outskirts of Montevideo. He works the night shift, monitoring the surveillance cameras of the entire building. One night Jara discovers Julia, a 25-year-old cleaning woman, through one of the cameras and is immediately attracted to her. Night after night, he watches her on the cameras while she works. Soon he starts following her after work: to the cinema, the beach and even to a date with another man. Jara's life becomes a series of routines and rituals around Julia, but eventually he finds himself at a crossroad and must decide whether to give up his obsession or confront it. Comedy-Drama. Spanish with English Subtitles. 85 Minutes.
