The TPD has ordered a new community policing and traffic safety tool, delivery is expected to take 30 to 45 days.
Citizens,
We have received numerous calls and emails today in reference to an article that appeared in this weekend's edition of The Citizen detailing our recent approval by the Council to purchase a "SMART" Trailer with drug funds. The order has been placed and we expect a deployment time frame of 30 to 45 days as the unit must be built, delivered, and marked with our logo. Additionally, our officers must be trained on its operation prior to its use.
We are placing your requests to have the unit deployed to your neighborhood on a list and we plan on getting quite a bit of use out of it once it is delivered and we begin to deploy it in response to your requests.
Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailers, or "SMART" units, are designed to accomplish several objectives:
1. They use Doppler radar to detect and display the speed of approaching vehicles. This is effective in neighborhoods where drivers often do not pay attention to posted speeds - the unit flashes the speed and a visual message to slow down if it detects a vehicle approaching at a speed higher than the posted limit.
2. SMART units perform traffic analysis functions such as vehicle count, time of day vs. speed counts, etc. We can use this data to determine when to deploy officers for increased enforcement and visible deterrent.
3. These units can be programmed to display any number of important messages to passing vehicles such as: "Click it or Ticket", "Accident Investigation Ahead", "Parade Route, Expect Delays", etc.
Our goal with this unit is to deploy it to an area within 24 hours of receiving a complaint so that a proper law enforcement response can be planned and carried out in order to increase safety. It will be placed at random locations throughout the Town when it is not being used in direct response to a specific complaint.
We will post more information on our website and on Nixle once the unit is delivered and deployment begins. If you would like to have your area placed on our list, please send me an email at [email protected].
Thanks,
Chief Brandon Perkins
